Dan and Jacob have decided to expand their TDG Industries business. Following on from the success of their water balloon activity last week they have created 'Sponge Bombs'. Made from sponges and rubber bands they can be dunked in water which when thrown spray water as they go before soaking their target.
The Hot Stuff business are also considering expanding their range to include a new flavour - Barbeque! This new flavour (which was decided on by a majority vote) will be incorporated into their current recipe - keeping the important element of spiciness in tact. They have also worked on their presentation for the sharks.
Haley ran her first session of NSC Cinemas today screening the movie 'Paper Planes'. She set up a classroom to resemble a cinemas, complete with snacks for sale, mini chocolates and popcorn. For the entry price of $2 customers got entry to the cinema, a free chocolate, and return entry tomorrow to view the second half of the movie. Her first screening was a great success!
Jade and Phoebe opened their coffee shop for business again at lunch time, to a slightly quieter crowd than usual. Hot drinks not proving as popular choice in the warm weather. Treats of chocolate cake and yoyos still a clear hit with students and teachers alike!
Jayson created a logo for his tattoo business and formatted his ever growing collection of impressive tattoos ready to print and sell. His collection comprises mostly skulls, and tribal tattoos, sure to be popular choices when they come to be sold.

This week we have organised ourselves according to what tasks we need to complete, the priority of those tasks and how much time we have left. Organisation and time management today have been key to our success.
Tarni completed her Instagram frame and organised her first photo booth session to run. Haley got permission to run her first movie screening session: Paper Planes will run across lunchtimes next Wednesday and Thursday. Phoebe continued to work on her presentation of her coffee shop business to the sharks. The Hot Stuff organised packaging and labels for their original version of the sauce ready to sell next week. Dan and Jacob ran a new activity: a trust activity between partners requiring them to throw a water balloon between them, every time they caught it they got to take a step further apart from each other, the pair who got the further apart before the balloon burst won.

We continued on our 5 week plans from last week today. The Hot Stuff Group decided to create a 'mild' version of their original hot sauce (though it still contains a Carolina Reaper!), this endeavor involved much discussion regarding the recipe, shopping more necessary ingredients and adjustments required to their promotional posters. Dan and Jacob ran a successful afternoon series of events involving golf and a vortex ball, with only one slight mishap of the vortex ending up stuck in a tree. Tarni did a fantastic job getting her Instagram frame almost fully complete and looking sensational. Phoebe began thinking how she and Jade might be able to present their coffee shop business concept to the sharks, just like on Shark Tank. Haley worked out some finer details associated with her NSC Cinemas business idea and wrote a letter seeking permission to use a classroom at lunch times to screen movies.

The Hot Stuff created a 5 week plan to bring them through to the end of Term 4 today. This weeks agenda was to fine tune their advertising and cook more hot sauce. The recipe now includes the Carolina Reaper Chilli which is known as the worlds hottest chilli according to its Guiness World Record and has rated over 2 million on the Scoville Scale. The Scoville Scale measures the spicy heat of food. The cooking of the chilli sauce had to move from inside to out as everyone began coughing from the pungent fumes of the chilli!
Phoebe and Jade ran their fourth coffee shop this week selling caramel slice, yo yos, coffee and hot chocolate. Selling out of all their treats and staying ahead in their profits!
Haley created her 5 week plan focusing on refining her advertising this week and printing her posters. She also finalised her movie choice for the first screening at NSC Cinemas: Paper Planes.
Dan and Jacob ran their sport competition today adding in two new experiences. TDG Industries now offers vortex and football activities in addition to golf. With the offer of chocolate prizes they drew in a few competitors and just made it out of the red to make a profit for the week.
Jayson set himself a 5 week plan today with the aim for this week to edit his designs on the computer as well as create new designs. Jayson used Paint.NET to edit his tattoos, adding in fine details and adding colour.
Tarni created an Instagram frame to use as a prop in her photo booth business #NSC Selfies. She created a 5 week plan that includes a trial run before graduating to photo paper.

Jade and Phoebe ran their coffee shop this week having bought ingredients ahead of time they had home made treats to sell and continued to earn a profit, enough profit to pay back their $20 Boss investment each.
Haley began hunting for movies to show based on feedback she has received. Olivia created her first polymer clay charms to sell, including her first order: a colourful sugar skull design.
The Hot Stuff team created a prototype of their recipe and decided on changes they need to make to it in future. Tarni researched how to make an Instagram frame to use as a prop for her photo booth.

Todays focus has been on marketing: investigating who our target markets are, as well as the best place and time to advertise our entrepreneurial businesses we will be running. Looking at the topic of marketing today meant that we spent some time refining our businesses, and starting to put together all the elements we've been working on so far.
We made some great prototypes, got some great feedback and extended our businesses presence around the school through marketing today. This is what each of our teams groups achieved today:
We made some great prototypes, got some great feedback and extended our businesses presence around the school through marketing today. This is what each of our teams groups achieved today:
- Tarni created an advertisement for her #NSCselfies and has planned decorations for her photo booth.
- Jayson added to his collection of tattoos with three new tribal designs which he drew freehand and are 100% original designs, he also worked on his first commission piece of a sugar skull with a curly mustache.
- Haley made a poster for her business NSC Cinemas, and finalised the snacks she will sell and their costings.
- Olivia created a logo and poster to advertise her business of tutoring and jewellery - and received her first order!
- Spike, Jake, Ethan and Aaron have worked on their hot sauce business - The Hot Stuff - they created a poster and logo, sought permission for use of the schools food room to create their product, and finalised their budget.
- Dan and Jacob ran a prototype for their golf tournament TDG Industries at lunchtime with a current profit of $3.40. TDG Industries are also currently test driving their new sporting tournament to be revealed...
- Jade and Phoebe also ran a prototype for their coffee shop; selling coffee, hot chocolate and mini cakes - coming in about $2 short of breaking even - but with plenty of coffee and hot chocolate supplies remaining for next time. The coffee shop opening times will expand to include recess receiving feedback from their customers.

Today on $20 Boss it was all about the money - the financial side of our businesses that is. We looked at a budgeting template on excel and imported our businesses cash flow figures to see if we were on the right track. In our budget we broke down what we would sell each item for to a unit price each; that is, we looked at all of our expenses and worked out how much it would cost us to make just one item to sell - whether that was one cup of coffee, one temporary tattoo, one movie ticket, or one piece of jewellery. Next we could start thinking about what would be a reasonable price to sell our items for, and predicted how many we would sell. Finally we could calculate what our projected profit would be! Income - Expenses = Profit.
26 August
Today's focus was centered around designing products and services that sell. To achieve this we needed to identify who our target markets are, refine our ideas so they are clear and specific to our audience and create surveys to conduct our market research.
Dan and Jacob created a prototype to run for their business TDG Industries - a golf tournament at lunch time with chocolate prizes! While they came up just short on profit they decided that they hadn't advertised quite well enough and that was an area to work on in future.
Jade and Phoebe planned a prototype for their coffee shop based off feedback from their survey and results around what drinks and treats people would be interested in purchasing from them.

We got started on our businesses today and came up with some business names. To help us we looked at a module on the $20 Boss site focusing on the 3 P's: People, Profit and Planet. Relating all our ideas to the 3 P's helped us to see if we could make our business successful. We found out some of the financial side of of businesses too, how to budget, what our costs might involve and hopefully how to maximise our profits.
Jade and Phoebe decided to run a coffee shop; Spike, Ethan, Aaron and Jake have created a hot sauce; Jacob and Dan will run a golf competition; Haley will run a movie theater during lunchtimes, Tarni is creating a photo booth, Jayson is designing temporary tattoos and Olivia is running a tutoring service and creating handmade jewellery.

We began brainstorming ideas for our own business today following the Shark Tank Journey - a mind map of steps to lead us through our ideas and passions, possible hurdles and solutions, ways to overcome failures and ways to test and refine our business ideas, and hopefully arrive at success!
We got our creative minds going by competing against each other to build the biggest card tower - using one additional object we could find in the room - blutack was a great help!

We made wind up cars using 2 plastic bottles, lacquer bands and skewers. This activity showed us a practical and hands on way to think outside the box and discover how to give an everyday object a second life through recycling in a creative way, it gave us an insight to how an entrepreneur might approach the situation in an environmentally sustainable way.

This week we discovered an entrepreneur can be anyone who is willing to take action to make their ideas reality to make the world a better place.
We discovered that Richard Branson left school at 16 to start up a student magazine and today he is a very successful business man; and that Daniel Flynn has created 'Thank You Water' upon his discovery of how much we as Australian's spend annually on bottled water, through his project he donates 50% of profits to overseas projects to increase access to safe drinking water. To date he has helped over 78,000 gain access to safe drinking water.
These inspiring stories made us realise that their beginnings were not far off our current situations and that we have the potential to make a change in our world. We tried to think outside the box - like an entrepreneur - we discovered alternative uses for plastic bags, thinking of everything from goat food to water bombs!

We looked at the variety of businesses that exist in our town and discovered what services they offer and what sectors they fall under, everything from finance to manufacturing.
We looked at investment options and what might make an investment worth our money. We watched an episode of Shark Tank and made critical decisions about which pitch we would invest in based off the risk and return possibilities.
We all got to sign up to the $20 Boss program run by the Foundation for Young Australians and NAB which asks the question: What could you do with twenty bucks?
The program backs us to channel our inner entrepreneur by imagining, designing and building our own businesses from the ground up. The program gives us twenty dollars to start our own business, through hands-on experience we will plan, budget, market and run our business idea building innovation, enterprise and financial literacy skills in the process.
